DUEING IT!!

Enclosed with your copy of this newsletter is a personalized letter from our Treasurer, Roxanne Russell, letting you know your dues payment status, and your information on file. If you have any changes, please return this sheet with your changes noted, and your dues payment if required.  Bring the information to the March meeting, or return the sheet to Roxanne at her home mailing address (she’s included a return address sticker.

Remember:

The referral list goes out to local accounting professionals in  May.  In order to be included, you must be current on your dues. If your update and/or dues payment is returned by April 7 a draft of the referral list will be available at the April meeting for your review.

Once again, many, many thanks to Roxanne for all the work she does to track our dues and keep our roster current!

February Meeting Notes

Vicki St. Martin opened the meeting at 11:55 a.m. Three guests introduced themselves.  Karen Ziegler made two job announcements. Pam Allman made a job announcement.

Roxanne Russell reminded everyone that dues for the next quarter will be due by the first of April.

Ken Jurgensen offered to take pictures for the membership roster.  Paula Mauro won the free lunch for April.

Pam introduced our speaker.  In so doing, Pam spoke of her own experiences in finding mentors when she began her accounting practice.  Sloane Reali is a youth advocate and teaches an independent living program for foster youth at Santa Barbara City College.  She gave a spirited program, with plenty of audience participation.

She began by pointing out that we are all resources for young people.  She spoke of her own experiences in becoming a worker with young people and networking with others to find resources.

She then discussed the Independent Living Program and the real life practical experiences offered to participants in the program, and urged us to consider becoming mentors and/or telling others about the program.

We then split into very small groups and shared our definitions of a mentor.  Among those offered were:

Teacher   Advisor    Role Model    Clarifier    Friend      Coach Sounding Board        Encourager

Sloane pointed out that any adult can be a mentor to a young person and that you can never know the impact one will have as a mentor.

Various members of the group shared their experience with mentoring; including Holly

Adamscheck who told us of an experience her husband has had in motivating a young man to become educated in a trade.

Sloane then spoke regarding career assessment and the benefits to students in acting as interns.  She then gave some case histories on her students.  Pam pointed out that children are out of foster care at age 18.  The Independent Living Program hopes to help older teens transition to independence.  (Ed. Note: - See Pam’s article elsewhere in this Newsletter.)
