SECRETARY'S MINUTES
The regular monthly meeting of the SBBA was held on August 17, 2004, at Mulligan's Cafe.
Jennifer Loren welcomed members and CPA guests.
Nancy LaDow won the free lunch drawing.
Job announcements were made, and also an announcement for a QuickBooks and Quicken class at Adult Ed Wake Center.
Dues will be due in September.
Lunch was served and each table had open topic discussions.
Jennifer Loren asked everyone to introduce themselves and give background information.
Vicki St.Martin introduced Eric from Paychex who will give a Human Resources seminar on Sept. 18.

Program for Tuesday, September 21, 2004
On Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at their regularly scheduled meeting, the Santa Barbara Bookkeepers Association will sponsor a talk by Gail Anikouchine entitled “The Bookkeeper’s Role in an Audit”. A recently named partner at MacFarlane, Faletti & Co., LLP, Gail has over fourteen years of audit, accounting and income tax experience. Before joining her firm twelve years ago, she worked with KPMG Peat Marwick.
Gail earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of San Francisco. She is currently a regional director of the American Society of Women Accountants, past president of the Santa Barbara Chapter, and is active on Boards of Directors of Santa Barbara not-for-profits.
Gail’s audit experience with MacFarlane, Faletti & Co. is primarily in the area of not-for-profits, but she also audits small businesses. During her presentation to the Santa Barbara Bookkeepers Association, Gail will address the importance of the bookkeeper in the internal control process, the value of reconciled schedules, and the process used to alert management of unusual transactions.

There is no pre registration, so hopefully all who show up can attend. We have 24 computers and an efficient overhead of the Instructor’s computer screen for easy visual learning. All computer Classes are co-taught by Phyllis Caplan CPA and Hillary Tentler CPA, unless indicated. There is a $10 lab fee.
September 17, 2004 Introduction to QuickBooks® Pro
Friday 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM
An overview and introduction to QuickBooks® software, the most popular small business software on the market today. This class will show you most of what QuickBooks can do for your business. You can then decide which parts work for you, what you need more information on, whether you want to be your own bookkeeper, etc…. Topics discussed include New Company Set up, Backup of data, Vendor and Customer Set up, entering deposits, check writing, Credit Cards. See the Intermediate and Advanced Classes also offered in fall. Questions are encouraged.
September 24, 2004 One day Intermediate QuickBooks® Pro
Friday 9:30-3:30 (Lunch break from 12-1)
½ day Accounts Receivable, ½ day Accounts Payable, Reports
If you are already familiar with QuickBooks® Pro this is a good class to get clarity on more specifics. We cover –the Chart of Accounts, Income, Accounts Receivable, Cash Sales and Bill paying, Accounts Payable, Expenses, Cost of Goods Sold, Profit & Loss Report and Balance Sheet. This is a follow up to the introductory class. Questions are encouraged.
October 8, 2004 One day ADVANCED QuickBooks® Pro
Friday 9:30-3:30 (Lunch break from 12-1)
For experienced QuickBooks® Pro Users, we will look at the more sophisticated uses of QuickBooks® Pro; General Ledger, Reporting, Payroll, Reconciliations, Estimating, Job Costing, Time and Dollar Billing. Review of the “Pro” features. Please bring your questions to class.
October 1, 2004. One day Quick Quicken®
Friday 9:30-3:30 (Lunch break from 12-1)
This class is an overview and introduction to “Quicken®”, software for personal finances.
This is accounting software for personal use including online banking. Learn how to write checks and enter deposits and credit cards. See our “QuickBooks®” classes for business software.
Phyllis Caplan is teaching Introduction to Bookkeeping I, Starting – Wednesday, Sept. 15
(5 Wednesdays) 5:15-7:15 p.m. Room 13, Wake Center. Text required.
These classes are designed for new business owners. Whether a novice or in need of a refresher class, the group dynamics creates an easy way to learn record keeping concepts.
