SECRETARY'S MINUTES

The regular monthly meeting of the Santa Barbara Bookkeepers' Association was held on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at Mulligan's Cafe.

Vice President Karen Mora opened the meeting and introduced new members.

The winner of the free lunch next month is Michelle Sullivan.

Two speakers shared the program regarding internet security access:

Angelique Springer from Citrix, which is a company that offers web-based access and support for softwear. This company has a division office in Goleta.

Gregg Hart, owner of Hart Computer Consulting, offers network support for small businesses and individuals.

There was a lively question and answer exchange among the members.

Here's a "Summer" note from Mark Schneiderman:

As the weather warms up, I take every opportunity to get outside
and enjoy nature. I hope you do the same. I also hope you take
precautions before you go on an outing, whether it's just a walk
in the park, a long hike, or an extensive backpacking trip.
Before you head out, plan ahead and follow these safety
procedures.

      - If you have any medical conditions, discuss your plans
with your health care provider and get approval prior to your
walk, hike, or other adventure.

      - Consider what emergencies could arise and how you would
deal with those situations. What is a worst-case scenario for the
weather you might encounter? What if you get lost or are suddenly
confronted by a dangerous animal? What if someone you're with
becomes ill or is injured? Think about these possibilities and
pack the supplies you would need to deal with these emergencies.

    - Draw out a map of your planned route and give it to someone
you trust.  This way, if something should happen, people will
know where to begin looking when they send out help.

    - Take it slow in the beginning.  Even if it's been only a
season since your last strenuous activity, take it easy at first.
Your body can fall out of shape very quickly, making it easy to
over-exert yourself.  The first few times you go out, take it
slow and learn your limits, then expand them next time if you
wish.

Enjoy the warmer weather.  Enjoy the great outdoors.  Enjoy your
health and safety.

Sincerely,

Mark Schneiderman

****"HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN LUCK"**** by Denis Boyles

1.  Get a Hobby

Find the thing that fascinates you most.  You'll recognize it instantly.  It's the thing you feel you have to do every day or the day's wasted.

2.  Obsess

Get to know it so well nothing about is is unpredictable, including it's ability to surprise you.  This part of the proces will take aproximately one lifetime.

3.  Charge for it

If you're so crazy about it and so good at it, go pro!

4.  Flourish

If you've followed steps one, two and three, this is the easy part.

5.  Succeed

Do it so wildly that everyone tells you how lucky you are.
